Learn the ancient Pre-Colonial Philippine Script that dates back to the 16th Century!

Baybayin Flash Cards is an educational tool based on the native writing system of the Philippines. This practice is a dying art and many Filipino people don’t know of its existence. It is important to preserve and revive a huge part of our culture and identity.
The Flash Cards will help you learn and master modern Baybayin, while testing your Filipino language (Tagalog). With these 63 flash cards, you can learn with your children, friends, and family, and play the games we designed to enhance your learning experience. We at the Gartden, want to teach the next generation Baybayin and hope to increase the knowledge in our community.

The History of Baybayin
In order to understand the inspiration for this project, we need to delve into the history of the Philippines in regards to the writing system. Baybayin may have pre-dated the first publications recorded in the Philippines. Baybayin was mostly written on fragile materials, such as banana leaves and bamboo wood, which doesn't hold well with time.
In 1593, during the Spanish Colonial period of the Philippines, Doctrina Christiana was written. This book was one of the first books printed in the Philippines. Doctrina Christiana was written in Latin, Spanish and Baybayin (Tagalog) for the sole purpose of introducing the natives of the Philippines to Christianity. After 333 years of Spanish Colonization in the Philippines, Baybayin was completely forgotten as our writing system.
Today, we have Tattoo culture to thank for the revitalization of Baybayin. However, a majority of the Filipino people do not know or know little of Baybayin. Unlike many years ago, it is very rare for someone to be completely fluent in reading and writing Baybayin.
We are writing this, in hopes to completely revive the native Philippine writing system. This can only be done if we start now, educating one another, passing the knowledge to generations to come. Baybayin is a true testament to the resilience of the Filipino people.
